How the brand was developed

Why has a Devon brand been developed?

Research conducted by the South West Regional Development Agency amongst those who had never visited the county showed that people’s view of Devon was of place that is:

  • Staid and very traditional.
  • Remote.
  • A Pleasant place to live and visit but not to do business.
  • Not innovative, dynamic or a vibrant
  • Little to offer young people in terms of a career.
  • A place where an image of thatched cottages, cream teas and rolling hills prevails.

This view, along with other factors is leading to a decline in Devon’s productivity and fewer tourists coming to the county (particularly younger visitors).

Both the business community and the public sector therefore saw the need to invest in a Devon Brand, which would challenge these perceptions and send out a consistent message about the county.
