Philip’s story

“It’s not that I hated my job, it’s just that I knew it wasn’t what I really wanted to do. I was also becoming increasingly bored of the urban landscape, my monotonous commute and people’s apathy towards each other. It was time for a change.

So I decided to move back to Devon and do something much more fulfilling – working for a renewable energy company.

What a transformation. My company really seems to be going places and making a difference. I can also work from home some days (the view from my study is quite a departure from that of an industrial estate) which means I‘m a lot more productive. The time I used to spend commuting is now spent with the kids, and we really feel like we’re part of a community now. The void that existed between ‘my time’ and ‘work time’ also seems to have disappeared – I’ve even taken up hill walking and sailing!

My wife jokes that I’m having mid-life crisis. I just call it living”

Philip - 42, self employed
